Description
What is the gospel according to the New Testament? C. H. Dodd, former Norris Hulse Chair of Divinity at Cambridge University, sought to answer this question not only for scholars, but also for those who teach the New Testament in the local church. Those who take this task seriously, says Dodd, “needs to grasp his subject as a whole, and to find a point of view from which it can be clearly conceived and presented.”
To that end, Dodd provides a three-part presentation of the New Testament’s teaching and development of the gospel message. Part 1 focuses on Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of God, its presence here and now, and the relationship between the kingdom and eternal life. Part 2 discusses the earliest writings of the New Testament and how they portrayed the gospel message simply and clearly. In Part 3, Dodd shows how Paul and the authors of Hebrews and the Fourth Gospel reflect theologically on the gospel message in unique, but penetrating ways. The Gospel in the New Testament serves as a useful introduction to the New Testament and its main message by one of the twentieth century’s most influential New Testament scholars.
